1. Who owns research data? 

The University of Iowa generally owns the data generated by all research, development, and related activities conducted under its oversight. The university’s ownership and stewardship of research data are based on applicable laws and regulations, contractual agreements, university policies, and sound management principles. The university also owns clinical data recorded in patient medical records. 

Consistent with academic tradition and its Intellectual Property Policy, the university does not claim ownership of copyrightable works of scholarship, research, or pedagogy.
