2. Who is eligible to apply for external funding?

Under the University Policy Manual, only faculty (excluding adjunct, visiting, emeritus, and retired faculty), qualified professional and scientific staff, and postdoctoral scholars are automatically eligible to serve as principal investigators (PIs) on sponsored projects. 

Adjunct, visiting, emeritus, and retired faculty must obtain approval from the vice president for research to serve as PI. Initiate the Request for Approval of Adjunct, Visiting, Emeritus, or Retired Faculty as PI workflow form in the Personnel section of records on the DSP Research Tracker.

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) faculty must submit a CLAS Request for Stipend Supplement/Fringe Benefits Support form when submitting external fellowship applications, in addition to the UI Proposal Routing Form.
